Founded in 1977 by Shihan Chris Thompson, Washinkai karate's roots lie in Wado-Ryu.
It is one of only a few styles of karate which is recognised by both the JKA (Japanese Karate Association) and the WKF (World Karate Federation).
Washinkai has established clubs in the UK from Hampshire to Kent and London, as well as Norway, Ireland and Spain.
Karate is a great way to keep fit, make friends and learn self defence.
At Hawkinge Karate, we do our best to keep things affordable for students. That's why there's no monthly fees, its just pay as you train. First session is free and thereafter just £5 for both children and adults.
There's plenty to learn at Washinkai Karate, ranging from basic kicking and punching techniques, blocks and counters, pre-arranged pairs work, kata and practical self-defence.
The syllabus ranges from beginner (Orange belt) up to advanced black belt with plenty of new and exciting challenges which are bound to test both your physical and mental abilities.
Learning karate is a great way to enhance your reflexes and co-ordination, get fit and build confidence as well as making new friends along the journey too!
Washinkai is steeped in tradition and a rich history with its roots deriving from Wado-Ryu Karate, founded by Sensei Hironori Otsuka in 1929. From there, links can be found to other styles such as Shotokan and Shito-Ryu. Sensei Otsuka also trained under Master Gichin Funakoshi, considered to to be the "Father of modern day karate".
